1832 O-105 R3 Capped Bust Half Dollar

Late die state is tough in higher grades with perhaps only 2 or 3 MS and a handful of AU examples reported. The prime die state is also on the scarce side, with only a handful of MS examples and many of the AU's having problems.

Variety Attribution: Obverse-Star 1 is 1 mm. from drapery. Star 13 is 1/2 mm. from curl. Date is 8 1/4 mm. low and well spaced, with full serif on 1.

O-105a: Little or no milling as the die has deteriorated. All stars drawn to edge and later states show date joined to rim by die chipping.

Reverse- 50 C. is 1 1/4 mm. and high, with olive stem only 1/4 mm. from top of C. and extending 3/4 of the way across it. A tall open 5 with straight pointed top. Arrow to A is 1/2 mm. Lower crossbar extends into wing at left. A small tine at upper right corner of shield. I is centered under T. A die defect line from top left corner of shield arcing to center of shield is visible on well preserved specimens.

O-105a: Little or no milling is visible and letters drawn to edge especially UNITED STATES.

NGC Graded AU50. A rather crusty example of this milling free variety. Soft luster peeks through the crust. Extreme die wear makes this an interesting coin.
