1817 O-103 R2 Capped Bust Half Dollar
Obverse: 3
Reverse: B (Second Marriage)
O-103 R2, 181.7, is below. O-103a R3 1817 normal at bottom
Though this die marriage is supposed to be as common as the 1817/3, it does not have the high grade example availability that the latter variety has. The later die state is not in nearly the demand that the early die state with the dot between 1 and 7 has, though it would seem there are far fewer available. The dot, by the way, was likely caused by a dropped tool or other object, and was removed via lapping sometime in the middle of the run of this marriage. There is a rather rare late die state where a dot appears, toward the end of the production run again at the date.
Variety Attribution O-103: Obverse-Stars are sharp and well formed. Date is 8 3/4 mm. Second 1 slants more than other figures. There is a round die defect dot just to the right and about opposite the center of the second 1. Commonly called the punctuated date.
O-103a: The dot is gone
Reverse- 50 C. is 1 3/4 mm. Arrow to A is 1/2 mm. The most unusual feature of this reverse is the I's in UNITED and AMERICA have the lower right serifs missing, thus causing them to look like J's. All lettering and devices sharp.
