1810 O-109 R3 Capped Bust Half Dollar

Obverse: 8
Reverse: I
O-109 R3 is below, O-109a R4 is at bottom.
The O-109 is tougher in grades above XF, with AU's being very scarce. There are a decent handful of MS examples out there with an MS65 leading as finest. Total 6 MS and 6 AU examples problem free in both die states the last 10 years. This marriage is known for its obvious die rotation and weak milling.

NGC Graded AU55. Another with Antique golden bronze toning. Negligible rotation on a marriage that normally shows an obvious reverse die rotation. No die cracks on the reverse and nearly perfect milling, which is normally weak on most examples.

Variety Attribution: Obverse-Star 1 is 1 mm. from drapery. Star 13 is 1/4 mm. from curl. Date us a wide 10 mm. and rather evenly spaced. Milling is weak. Mouth well open to full depth.

O-109a: There is now a sharp crack that has developed from edge through star 1 to eye which extends to star 9 then to edge. This crack came later than the reverse cracks previously mentioned and this late state with the obverse die crack is RARE. Another crack from edge at start of first crack below star 1 to top of date.

Reverse-50 C. is 1 3/4 mm. Arrow to A is 1/2 mm. Besides the two crossbars into right wing, all crossbars over run the border line of shield. Milling is very light to none at all. Left side of T and right side of I are in line. Most specimens show fine die cracks. One from feathers at right of shield to claws crosses leaves and tip of wing, to join a crack from edge that curves under UNI. Another crack through NITED STA and along top of scroll, to field between AMER and wing. Note the above example does not have the cracks.
