1834 O-114 R1 Small Date, Small Letters Capped Bust Half Dollar
Obverse: 13
Reverse: N
A decent grouping of MS64 examples is at the top of the census for this common marriage, with all grades below obtainable.
Variety Attribution: Obverse-Stars close to milling and most are flat and irregular. Star 13 is 3/4 mm. from curl. Date is 6 1/2 mm. and high with the small 8 showing recutting at lower outside loop. Mouth slightly open. Mouth not as open and upper lip not as deformed as O-113 obverse 12. One recut at lower serif. A fine die line shows on most specimens from top of star 13 along right side of curls.
Reverse- 50 C. is 1 mm. and high. 5 has a short, heavy, straight top. There is a sharp centr dot between crossbars 3 and 4. A diagonal defect line between stripes 3, 4, and 5 near the bottom. Arrowheads narrow and separated. Arrow to A is 1 1/2 mm. Several crossbars extend sharply to left of shield. The E in the scroll has also been removed and recut to the left, similar to O-113 rev M. S recut at lower left. This variety, both obverse and reverse, is remarkably similar to O-113. It is possible that O-114 is a reworked version of O-113, but there are enough specific differences to call it a different variety.
