1823 O-103 R2 Capped Bust Half Dollar

Very common die marriage appearing frequently in all grades with perhaps MS65 being tops.


NGC Graded MS62. A true MS coin with full luster and original toning. Luster is slightly weaker on the high points from coin to coin contact, but complete. Small scattered contact marks. From Heritage: An exceptional example with olive-gold peripheries surrounding lighter straw-gold centers on both sides. The surfaces retain frosty luster with bold design motifs. Encapsulated in a prior generation holder.

Variety Attribution: Obverse-Stars are large. Star 7 points to the extreme front edge of the cap and is close to it. Date is 7 1/2 mm. and low. 3 has a bold curl and leans left toward the 2. Indented center dot.

Reverse- 50C is 2 1/2 mm. Arrow to A is 1/2 mm. Left side of I under center of T.  Right base of A2 is usually defective. No center dot. Choice specimens show fine vertical lines between left wing and head of eagle.

Below is a very late die state example that exhibits worn dies and the beginning of a reverse crack from S to O and across the inside bottom of the O to F. This is considered the "O-103a" with this crack, and a possible R6?
