1817 O-108 R4 Capped Bust Half Dollar
Obverse: 5 (Second Marriage)
Reverse: E
O-108 R7? (No die cracks) Below, O-108a R4 is at bottom. This one may be tougher than an R4 as it hardly ever makes an appearance in any grade. The Overton example, an MS63, may be finest but has not come to market. There may only be 1 or 2 other MS examples out there, and only a small handful of decent problem free AU's, none of which may represent the early die state. (Special shout out to DPVilla for the images of the prime die state!)
Variety Attribution O-108: Obverse-All stars large and close to milling. Star 13 is 3/4 mm. from curl. Date is 9 mm. widely spaced and well centered.
O-108a: Die cracks, one from edge joins stars 3 through 7 and continues above front of cap. Another from edge touches two points pf star 8 and to curls. Another heavy sharp crack from edge to star 10 then down through two points of star 11, crossing the lower edge of bust and to edge left of first 1.
Reverse- 50 C. is 1 1/2 mm. sharp and well formed. Arrow to A is 1/2 mm. Both O and C in OF AMERICA are distinctly recut. I is centered under left side of T.
