1818 O-114 R3 Capped Bust Half Dollar
Obverse: 11
Reverse: J (Second Marriage)
O-114 R3 below, O-114a R3 bottom.
Both can't be R3 for an overall R3, and the later die state does appear more often for sale, therefore one can make the assumption that the earlier die state is likely a high R4 or low R5 to fit the overall rarity rating. There are quite a few high grade MS examples with two gems at the top of the earlier die state. Note that I am counting the earlier state as having all the cracks of the later state except the crack across CA to under R. It seems many examples most but not all of the later state cracks.
Variety Attribution O-114: Obverse- Star 1 sharply recut with two extra lower points. Date is 9 1/2 mm. and low, 81 closer than either 18. A small recutting mark at lower left base of first 8.
O-114a: Fine die crack from lower curl curving to edge between stars 11 and 12. Another fine crack curves from edge above star 7, across peak of cap to join stars 8 through 11 and the first crack.
O-114: Reverse- 50 C. is 1 1/2 mm. Arrow to A is 1/2 mm. Arrowheads close and lightly connected. Stand of E is centered under D. Right side of T and left side of I in line. AM close with base of A higher. Most show a fine die crack below 50 to arrowheads.
O-114a: Die crack now extends through CA to field under R.
